Chief Data Officer: complete definition in AI for SMEs
Chief Data Officer (CDO)
The Chief Data Officer (CDO) is the responsible party of an organization's data strategy: data quality, governance, accessibility and value creation. They ensure company data is reliable, protected and leveraged as an asset — the indispensable prerequisite before any AI project, since AI systems are only as good as their data.
What it changes for an SME
The CDO is often the missing link between AI strategy and data reality:
- Quality: clean, up-to-date sales data avoids false conclusions and models that fail in production;
- Organization: defining who owns which data, how often it is updated, who has access;
- Value creation: turning dormant data (customer history, meeting minutes, invoices) into assets usable by AI agents.
What you should know
In SMEs, the Chief Data Officer is not a dedicated position. Their responsibilities are shared between the leader, the IT lead and the fractional AI director. The essential point: someone must carry the question "are our data ready and reliable?" before any AI investment. That is an AI audit question, not a technology one.
