AI copilot: complete definition in AI for SMEs

AI copilot

An AI copilot is an AI assistant integrated directly into an existing work tool (text editor, CRM, spreadsheet, development environment) that assists the user in real time — without switching to another application. It completes, reformulates, suggests, corrects and generates, always in the context of the current task. GitHub Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot and Notion AI are widespread examples.

What it changes for an SME

The AI copilot is the most natural interface for non-technical teams:

  • a CRM copilot that drafts the follow-up email based on contact history;
  • a document copilot that suggests relevant excerpts while writing a proposal;
  • an accounting copilot that suggests the right budget accounts when reading an invoice.

The productivity gain is real: 20 to 40% in writing, according to published studies. But the copilot is not magic: it improves what the user already does, it does not replace an AI strategy.

What you should know

Consumer copilots (Microsoft 365, Google Workspace) are easy to deploy but limited in customization. A custom copilot (built with an LLM API + your data) is more powerful but requires development. In fractional AI leadership, we evaluate which copilot level matches your maturity and budget.
